Dogs Helping Soldiers Overcome PTSD
(KCEN) -- It's been proven by therapists and psychiatrists that pets help people dealing with stress or mental issues.
And one volunteer group in New York is using that approach to help war veterans.
Guardians of Rescue in New York pairs dogs up with soldiers suffering from post traumatic stress disorder.
John Walis came back from Afghanistan and developed PTSD.
Doctors prescribed him pills to control the anxiety, but he says that stress only subsided when Tommy, a rescue dog, came into his life.
Walis said, "Having the dog has just changed my life. It just brings me such joy. And having him and showing this love and affection, my thoughts aren't on Afghanistan every day, every few minutes because that's what was happening to me."
Walis is now a volunteer himself at Guardians of Rescue.
He helps match soldiers to their rescue dogs.
